Kathryn Steely served as President of the American Viola Society from 2014-2017 and American Viola Society Festival Coordinator in 2016 and 2018. She also served as editor of the Journal of the American Viola Society during which time she led a major revision and expansion of contributions and layout to bring the journal to a wider audience. She has received the American Viola Society's Maurice Riley Award in 2006, the AVS Founders Award in 2010, and the AVS Distinguished Service Citation in 2018. Her contributions were cited in “Our Golden Jubilee: Fifty Extraordinary Leaders in Fifty Years” upon the celebration of the American Viola Society’s golden jubilee year.

She is a sought-after adjudicator for music competitions including Young Artist competitions, the Primrose International Viola Competition, AVS Festival competitions, MTNA regional and State competitions, ASTA solo competitions and university concerto competitions at Northwestern University and TCU.
